She discovered artemisinin, a major active compound contained in the\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"\">Artemisia annua<\/span><\/em><span class=\"\">\u00a0plant. This discovery revolutionized the treatment of malaria. For this discovery, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. She is the twelfth woman to receive this prize, as well as the first Chinese woman. She shares her prize with scientists William C. Campbell and Satoshi \u014cmura, who conducted research on parasitic diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Education and early career<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Tu Youyou was born in Ningbo, China. She earned her pharmacy degree from Peking University Medical School in 1955 and later studied traditional Chinese medicine. This diverse training allowed her to combine ancient and traditional knowledge with modern medical methods at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where she spent most of her career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">&#8220;Project 523&#8221; and the quest for a malaria remedy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">In the 1960s, the Vietnam War was raging, and malaria was devastating soldiers in Southeast Asia. The Chinese government then launched a vast research program called &#8220;Project 523.&#8221; Its goal: to find an effective treatment against malaria. Tu Youyou was appointed to lead a team of researchers who explored numerous remedies from traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The research examined no fewer than 2,000 traditional recipes and more than 600 medicinal plants. But it was an ancient text from the 4th century that sparked her curiosity. The author, Ge Hong (or Zhichuan), a scholar from the Jin dynasty, recommended in a medical treatise the cold extraction of\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"\">Artemisia annua<\/span><\/em><span class=\"\">\u00a0for the treatment of fevers. After numerous trials, her research team succeeded in isolating artemisinin in 1972. This molecule demonstrated unparalleled effectiveness against the malaria parasite in experiments on animals and then on humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Medical influence and scientific recognition<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Artemisinin is now the basis of many treatments recommended by the WHO in the fight against malaria. Every year, millions of people are saved from certain death, particularly in tropical countries. Tu Youyou&#8217;s recognition with the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine honors not only her discovery of the molecule but also the contributions of traditional Chinese medicine to modern Western medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">&#8220;This year&#8217;s Nobel laureates have developed therapies that have revolutionized the treatment of some of the most devastating parasitic diseases,&#8221; the Nobel committee emphasized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Scientific legacy and distinctiveness<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Tu Youyou is the first Chinese scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The combination in her research of traditional methods and knowledge with modern science makes her an exceptional researcher with an exemplary career. She persevered in a difficult scientific and political context, which ultimately paved the way for new approaches in drug discovery from plants. She also demonstrated the importance of revisiting ancient knowledge by applying modern scientific methods to find new treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Artemisinin is the major discovery of researcher Tu Youyou, which made it possible to treat millions of people for malaria and save just as many lives. Her Nobel Prize highlighted methods and a vision that ran counter to modern scientific approaches, which often ignore ancient treatments and knowledge in favor of focusing solely on new techniques.
