Tu Youyou is a pharmacologist and researcher originally from the Zhejiang region of China. She discovered artemisinin, a major active compound contained in the Artemisia annua plant. This discovery revolutionized the treatment of malaria. For this discovery, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. She is the twelfth woman to receive this prize, as well as the first Chinese woman. She shares her prize with scientists William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura, who conducted research on parasitic diseases.

Education and early career

Tu Youyou was born in Ningbo, China. She earned her pharmacy degree from Peking University Medical School in 1955 and later studied traditional Chinese medicine. This diverse training allowed her to combine ancient and traditional knowledge with modern medical methods at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where she spent most of her career.

“Project 523” and the quest for a malaria remedy

In the 1960s, the Vietnam War was raging, and malaria was devastating soldiers in Southeast Asia. The Chinese government then launched a vast research program called “Project 523.” Its goal: to find an effective treatment against malaria. Tu Youyou was appointed to lead a team of researchers who explored numerous remedies from traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia.

The research examined no fewer than 2,000 traditional recipes and more than 600 medicinal plants. But it was an ancient text from the 4th century that sparked her curiosity. The author, Ge Hong (or Zhichuan), a scholar from the Jin dynasty, recommended in a medical treatise the cold extraction of Artemisia annua for the treatment of fevers. After numerous trials, her research team succeeded in isolating artemisinin in 1972. This molecule demonstrated unparalleled effectiveness against the malaria parasite in experiments on animals and then on humans.

Medical influence and scientific recognition

Artemisinin is now the basis of many treatments recommended by the WHO in the fight against malaria. Every year, millions of people are saved from certain death, particularly in tropical countries. Tu Youyou’s recognition with the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine honors not only her discovery of the molecule but also the contributions of traditional Chinese medicine to modern Western medicine.
